GÉANT is the pan-European network which serves the educational and research community. Together with Europe's national research networks, GÉANT connects 40 million users in over 8,000 institutions across 40 countries. GÉANT researches into emerging technologies in order to offer a list of tools, applications and multi-domain advanced services on a leading, fast and secure network. This project entails a wide range of tasks: i2CAT takes part in the AutoBAHN design, in the research of last mile solutions and in the virtualization methods applicable to the GÉANT network in a framework named GEMBus, in order to offer added value services through the composition of services.

Now in its third term, the GÉANT project is responsible for the network and seeks to develop all aspects of European research and education networking:

  • Shaping the Internet of the future through the network and a portfolio of advanced services for the user community
  • Tackling the digital divide of research and education networking across Europe
  • Fostering technological research to assure Europe’s role at the forefront of networking and e-Science
