Through 4 pilot tests in railway and highway between Figueres and Perpignan, 5GMed will demonstrate advanced cross-border trials of 5G application scenarios in Cooperative Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) and Future Railway Mobile Communications System services (FRMCS).<\/h4>\n

June 16th, Barcelona (Spain)<\/strong> – <\/em>The 5GMED project<\/a>, with a global investment of 16 Mio euros of which 75% is financed by the European Commission, aims to bring a sustainable 5G deployment model for future mobility in the Mediterranean Cross-Border Corridor<\/strong>. The project will be launched in September 2020 and will be implemented until November 2023.<\/p>\n

5GMED was officially presented on June 16th<\/sup> at the i2CAT Foundation\u2019s headquarters in Barcelona in a press conference<\/strong> hosted by the Minister for Digital Policy and Public Administration of the Government of Catalonia and President of i2CAT\u2019s Board of Trustees<\/strong>, Mr. Jordi Puigner\u00f3. The Minister highlighted the importance of this project to brings together two main industries in Catalonia: the ICT and automobile industries.<\/p>\n

Beyond 5G: towards a sustainable, innovative mobility<\/strong><\/h4>\n

5GMED will test services on a broad range of technologies beyond 5G<\/strong>, including onboard sensors<\/strong> and Artificial Intelligence<\/strong> (AI), providing advanced connectivity services in a scalable and replicable manner across transport paths. The infrastructure will support a remote driving use case<\/strong>, advanced traffic management, applications and business service continuity in railway, and follow-me infotainment both in highway and railway scenarios.<\/p>\n

The use case demonstrations<\/strong> will be carried out in three small scale testing facilities in order to replicate real conditions, based on the outcomes of the tests, a final integration and validation will be carried out in the cross-border section between Figueres and Perpignan<\/strong>. A strategic section in the Trans-European Transport Network since it sustains 55% of the road traffic between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe and 65% of the rail traffic.<\/p>\n

A multi-stakeholder approach<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The i2CAT Foundation is the Technical Manager<\/strong> of 5GMED and will monitor its progress and suggest solutions when needed, with special emphasis on achieving the successful delivery of the ambitious project objectives. For the Connected, Cooperative and Automated (CCAM) mobility<\/strong> applications, i2CAT contributes with an important technology to enable the 5GMED multi-stakeholder architecture, focusing on the integration of multi-tenant edge and radio nodes into the overall system. This technology comes with a software management stack enabling service orchestration and slicing.<\/p>\n

Moreover, i2CAT will integrate the edge and radio nodes<\/strong> with satellite backhaul capabilities and self-sustainable energy sources.<\/strong> i2CAT’s CCAM technology will be deployed in Castelloli for small scale testing and in the cross-border corridor for large scale demonstrations. On the railway\u2019s applications, i2CAT will provide multi-tenant small cells in the trains<\/strong>, which will support dynamic instantiation of tenants, and reconfiguration of the carrier frequency when crossing the border and contribute virtual network functions supporting computer vision capabilities for the CCTV and obstacle detection applications<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A joint effort with the support of public administrations<\/strong><\/h4>\n

5GMed brings together the key partners to deliver advanced CCAM and FRMCS services in the Figueres – Perpignan section of the Mediterranean corridor.<\/p>\n

The consortium<\/strong>, coordinated by Cellnex Telecom, includes 21 partners from 7 countries<\/strong> representing the telecom sector<\/strong> (Vodafone, Hispasat, Retevisi\u00f3n, and Cellnex France); transport and mobility sector<\/strong> (Abertis Autopistas, SNCF, Linea Figueres Perpignan S.A., Anadolu Isuzu, Valeo); technology and solution providers<\/strong> (Axbryd, Nearby Computing, Atos, Athens Technology Center, COMSA Corporaci\u00f3n, Terra3D); consulting services providers<\/strong> (Eight Bells), research institutions<\/strong> (CTTC, i2CAT, IRT-Saint Exup\u00e9ry, Vedecom); outreach organization<\/strong> for mobile and digital transformation of society (Mobile World Capital Barcelona).<\/p>\n

The project is also supported by the public administrations<\/strong> of both countries including the Occitania Region<\/strong> and the Govern de la Generalitat de Catalunya<\/strong>, who promoted the 5G corridor from the start.<\/p>\n
