Description

CHARISMA proposes an intelligent hierarchical routing and paravirtualised architecture that combines two important concepts: devolved offload with shortest path nearest to end-users and an end-to-end security service chain via virtualized open access physical layer security (PLS).

Providing a cloud infrastructure platform with increased spectral, energy-efficient and enhanced performance CHARISMA targets the 5G-PPP objectives of 1000-fold increased mobile data volume, 10-100 times higher data rates, 10-100 times more connected devices and 5x reduced latency. Bringing together 10G-wireless (via mm-wave/60-GHz & free-space optics, FSO) access and 100G fixed optical (OFDM-PON) solutions through an intelligent cloud radio-access-network (C-RAN) and intelligent radio remote head (RRH) platform with IPv6 Trust Node routing featuring very low-latency for the traffic management.

CHARISMA solution will provide enhanced user experience with ground-breaking low-latency services, high-bandwidth and mobile cloud resilient network security.

Estimated Impact

The goals and objectives of CHARISMA directly address the rapid network evolution which drives the 5G initiative.

CHARISMA will meet the goals of low-latency and security required for future mobile/wireless networks, using two important concepts:

  1. devolved offload with shortest path nearest to end-users
  2. an end-to-end security service chain via virtualized open access physical layer security (PLS).

Integration with an intelligent mobile cloud will increase spectral and energy efficiency, and provide enhanced performance with 1000-fold higher data volume for 10-100 times the number of mobile connected devices, and reducing latency by factors targeting e.g. the envisaged machine-type of communications in future 5G deployments.

ICT access technologies, such as cloud-radio access networks (C-RAN), Big Data and 5G  infrastructures underpin our Digital Society. ICT-involved stakeholders now have a critical opportunity  to migrate from service-dedicated access networks to open, multi-layer networks. Competing service  providers connect to end-user access through a single network in a free market environment, where the  end-users can then choose their ICT services (e.g. TV, Internet, video-on-demand (VoD)) from their
preferred service provider. Such open access network model is enabled by virtualization techniques in core and wireless access networks (e.g. mobile virtual network operators-MVNOs). CHARISMA looks to the future envisioning fully converged (wired/wireless) access networks building on Cloud-like and 5G infrastructures.
