The i2CAT Foundation participates in the #CanSatCat competition, in which students will launch small satellites

More than 60 students participate in this competition, organized by the Cosmic Research association of the UPC-ESEIAAT and impulsed by the European Space Agency, with the support of the Government of Catalonia and i2CAT

The #CanSatCat competition is celebrated every year in Europe by ESA’s Oficina Europea per a l’Educació en l’Espai (ESERO) and consists of designing, building, and launching small satellites. In Catalonia, UPC’s ESEIAAT and Barcelona Tech organize the qualifying round, in collaboration with the Ministry for Digital Policy and Public Administration, i2CAT, and the BCN Drone Center. The contest will take place at 10 o’clock on the 27th of March.

The Minister, Jordi Puigneró, will attend at 12.30 h the launching of the small satellites designed by secondary school students, aged from 14 to 19 years old, participants of this edition, before the statewide qualifying phase. This event aims to stimulate STEM vocations in the new generations.

A scientific and technological challenge

This competition is not only about launching a satellite and ensuring its return. The satellites must measure the air temperature and the atmospheric pressure and transfer this data by telemetry. They also have to analyze and interpret the results obtained critically.

On the 9th and 10th of April, respecting the COVID-19 restrictions, the 9 participant teams will present the final report analyzing the results in front of a jury. The winner will represent Catalonia in the statewide CanSat trial next July.
