For the first time, the attenders to the MWC Barcelona will have 5G experiences even before their arrival to the Congress. Within the framework of the initiative 5G Barcelona, FGC jointly with Mobile World Capital Barcelona, Vodafone, and the Catalan Government, have installed a commercial 5G coverage. The new railway network will cover not only the station but also the tunnel that links the four stops of the trial to test new 5G solutions in a real environment.
After the first 5G pilot, FGC will maintain the facility as a global test laboratory. The aims are, on the one hand, to improve the railway logistics by optimizing its management. On the other hand, to create new applications and solutions to improve customer service and safety, such as the implementation of real-time information systems or personalized multimedia entertainment. In the future, the aim is to extend this 5G infrastructure throughout the FGC network.
The opening took place last Wednesday in Spain Square Station. The ceremony had the presence of the Catalan Minister of Digital Policies and Public Administration, Jordi Puigneró; the Catalan Minister of Territory and Sustainability, Damià Calvet; the director of 5G of Mobile World Capital Barcelona, Eduard Martín; the president of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, Ricard Font, the territorial director of Vodafone in Catalonia, Laura Molist. Sergi Figuerola, CTIO of the i2CAT Foundation, also assisted at the opening as a member of the 5G Barcelona initiative.
