The Science and Technology Park of UdG hosted the second sectorial revitalization day organized by SmartCatalonia within the framework of the 5G Barcelona initiative

The needs that the tourism sector expects to solve with the help of digital advanced technologies were at the core of the conference “La tecnologia 5G i el seu impacte en el sector turístic”, organized by SmartCatalonia within the framework of the 5G Barcelona initiative at the Science and Technology Park of Universitat de Girona. The meeting explored some examples of projects that are already taking place in Catalonia, such as the use of facial recognition to personalize user experience at fairs and congresses or the digitized visit at the Empúries archeological site, pioneer in the application of audiovisual and immersive solutions.

The event had the support of Associació d’Empreses de Noves Tecnologies de Girona (AENTEG) and was the second of four sectorial revitalization conferences that will take place around Catalonia to promote the opportunities that 5G offers to diverse economic sectors and to make the region a reference territory in this field.

In this sense, the secretary of Telecommunications, Cybersecurity and Digital Society, David Ferrer, highlighted that “the emergence of 5G will be an opportunity that will mean very high turnovers, new jobs and new associated investment”. Ferrer added that “Catalonia is ready for this change, as it is a hub for technological talent and has a prominent position with regard to 5G research.”

For his part, the director of SmartCatalonia, Daniel Marco, presented the 5G Strategy of Catalonia and its 5 main guiding axis: technological infrastructures ready for this change around the region; specialized innovation promoted by the deployment of real-environment labs; local talent; a strong ecosystem lead by public-private initiatives like 5G Barcelona, and promotion through international events and territorial revitalization conferences.

The next event will take place next May 9th in Lleida, where the possibilities of 5G for the agri-food business will be explored.
