The Looming Factory Consortium has, as its main purpose, to group, consolidate and guide current research in Industry 4.0 of the main R&D&I Centers in Catalonia towards industrial verification demonstrators and validation of current research results. The Project will define and obtain the offer of the current technologies that will later allow the leap towards full digitalization of Catalan industry. As an additional consequence, it will define the roadmap of future research to be developed and will facilitate the connection of Catalonia’s research and innovation centers with its industry and civil society.
Looming Factory proposes to develop and validate -in pilot plants – digital technologies of the “Fourth Industrial Revolution”, characterized by the interconnexion of machines and systems and the operational integration of workers in a productive environment, as well as by the exchange of information with logistics and distribution systems.

Estimated impact:
First, these technologies, their development and implementation, can reverse the process of industrial relocation experienced by all developed countries, and especially Catalonia and Western Europe. Manufacturing products closer to the end customer and at lower costs, can make that countries that adopt technology 4.0 faster, become new poles of industrial and social development. In addition, the introduction of advanced digital technologies in any industrial sector will help maintain local talent, allowing a more homogeneous distribution of wealth.
The automated production -with digital basins of the plant located in the cloud- also allows the distribution in space and time of human intervention, increasingly oriented to knowledge and not to standardization and repetition therefore, this evolution must facilitate the work-life balance.
Finally, with the direct connection between the customer / user and the manufacturer / supplier, new business models will be opened, much more dynamic and based on information, which will allow to develop new areas of knowledge, development and business, with activities not necessarily linked to local production.
Looming Factory té com a principal objectiu agrupar, consolidar i orientar la recerca actual en Indústria 4.0 dels principals Centres R+D+I de Catalunya per facilitar i accelerar la introducció al mercat de tecnologies emergents en aquest camp. En primer lloc, el Projecte definirà i obtindrà l’oferta de les tecnologies actuals que permetran, en un futur, el salt cap a la digitalització completa de la indústria catalana. Com a conseqüència addicional, el projecte definirà el full de ruta de la investigació que es desenvoluparà i facilitarà la connexió dels centres de recerca amb la indústria i la societat.
Looming Factory proposa desenvolupar i validar en plantes pilot les tecnologies digitals de la “quarta revolució industrial”, caracteritzada per la interconnexió de màquines i sistemes i la integració operacional dels treballadors amb l’entorn productiu, així com per l’intercanvi d’informació amb els sistemes de logística i distribució.

Impacte estimat:
En primer lloc, el seu desenvolu pament i implementació d’aquestes tecnologies, pot revertir el procés de deslocalització industrial que experimenten molts dels països desenvolupats, especialment Catalunya i Europa occidental. La fabricació de productes amb menys costos i més propers al client final, pot fer que els països que adoptin la tecnologia 4.0 més ràpid es converteixin en nous pols de desenvolupament industrial i social. A més a més, la introducció de tecnologies digitals avançades en qualsevol sector industrial ajudarà a mantenir el talent local, permetent una distribució més homogènia de la riquesa.
La producció automatitzada també permetrà millorar la distribució física i horària dels i les treballadores, cada cop més orientades al coneixement. Per tant, aquesta evolució ha de facilitar l’equilibri treball-vida.
Finalment, amb la connexió directa entre el client / usuari i el fabricant / proveïdor, s’obriran nous models de negoci, molt més dinàmics i basats en informació, que permetran desenvolupar noves àrees de coneixement, amb activitats no necessàriament vinculades a la producció local.
