Description
QuantumCAT has several purposes. First, to boost the development of quantum technologies, thought to be integrated in the current industry. Second, to foment synergies among different pillars of quantum technology in Catalunya. Third, to strengthen Catalunya’s position as a referent region in quantum technologies. Forth, to become a polo tractor of financing through other programmes.
QuantumCAT group is built up by 4 pillars:
- P 1: Quantum Communication: This pillar is focused in overcoming main limitations present in current quantum communications and in distribution of quantum keys. I2Cat takes part of this pillar of work.
- P 2: Quantum Computation: The main objective of this pillar is to develop a cloud platform allowing remote users to have access to a quantum variational processor and of programable annealing. In this platform new algorithms, beyond classic computation, could be executed.
- P 3: Quantum Simulation (QUASI-CAT): This pillar intends to approach the challenge of transforming quantum simulators to accessible and commercial quantum technologies.
- P 4: Quantum Sensors: The main objective of this pillar is to develop suitable experimental and theoretical methods to enable the use of ultraprecise atomic sensors in commercial products mainly in biomedical applications.
Estimated impact:
QuantumCAT project have the potential to transform the vast knowledge in quantum technologies in Catalunya into results with an important socioeconomical impact at medium and long term.
Different quantum technologies have several degrees of integration in the economy. Quantum communications and quantum sensors are already part of our current economy, with products and services offered by specialized companies. QuantumCAT objectives in these areas shall improve the performance of current practices with an immediate value in such sectors. At medium and long term, these innovations will open new applications and new markets.
Quantum computation and quantum simulation, however, are in a research phase, driven by the enormous potential to produce changes in the economy. In these fields, QuantumCAT establishes more strategic objectives: new implementations (hardware), new transversal tools (software) and new applications.
