i2CAT participates in the SENIX project on sensorization and inspection of networks to transform the utilities’ sector

09/04/2021

In December 2017, the i2CAT Foundation started to collaborate on the SENIX project, a RIS3CAT program to develop new technologies and systems that can improve the control of distribution networks and infrastructures of service providers.

The SENIX project, which ended in March this year, was coordinated by Nedgia and has had different collaborating companies, such as CNM-CSIC, Worldsensing, Eurecat, and Cetaqua. The project is based on integrating sensors, communications, data analysis, and platform development, aiming to improve the service of infrastructure management and maintenance. At the same time, the project aims to monitor the operations of distribution networks.

The i2CAT Foundation has led the activities related to the study, analysis, and proposal of communication technologies in the subsoil and confined spaces that can face the current challenges of connectivity in the utilities’ environment. Additionally, it has also contributed to implement and validate a prototype based on state-of-the-art NB-IoT/LTE-M cellular technologies for monitoring and detecting leaks in the gas distribution network.

SENIX has been a step forward in adopting tools that can improve the performance of the commercial systems available today. In many cases, they are limited or expensive, not allowing to easily obtain information from various network points. The progress achieved in the project improved the following aspects: autonomy, monitoring capacity, transmission, and analysis of parameters of quality and safety of the network’s elements. Thanks to the development of this technological advance, leaks can be detected, quality and operation variables monitored in networks, improve traceability and location of components or inspect the interior of ducts more efficiently and safely, in addition to other actions.

SENIX is an R&D project of the RIS3CAT Community Utilities 4.0 and has the co-financing of the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union within the framework of the ERDF Operational Programme of Catalonia 2014-2020.
