Research project

6GDIFERENTE

Spain

6GDIFERENTE will address two of the major challenges of advanced 6G mobile communications:

  • The establishment of aerial device communications.
  • The continuity and quality of services in virtualized Edge environments in mobility situations.

Furthermore, driven by the 6G network development schedule, new promising and fundamental technologies for 6G will be explored, especially those identified both at the level of European R&D support programs for communication networks (6G-IA and SNS-JU), and those promoted by the scientific community in relation to the new functionalities expected from future 6G networks. To this end, the infrastructure and techniques developed and integrated within the virtualized and federated infrastructure built in the Open-VERSO Cervera Center of Excellence project will be expanded towards new challenges and technologies.

The 6GDIFERENTE Group is formed by three leading technology centers in the field of information technologies:

  • Vicomtech
  • Gradiant
  • i2CAT Foundation

Within the framework of the project, i2CAT will lead Work Packages (WP) 2 (Convergent 6G network architecture and development of communication infrastructures) and 4 (Federated and cooperative experimentation services). In WP2, i2CAT’s research staff will provide key functionalities to the unified 6G networks with the federated experimentation network, while in WP4, the objective is to provide the federated network with tools for remote and collaborative configuration and monitoring.

Estimated impact

The Cervera Center 6GDIFERENTE has identified the following objectives:

  • ARCHITECTURE: The architecture of a common, scalable, low-cost, and evolvable advanced mobile communications network infrastructure will be designed and implemented, allowing for the simultaneous support and development of technologies, and the experimentation of new concepts that will be part of future 6G networks.
  • MOBILITY: A communications network for environments with high mobility and infrastructure distribution will be implemented, demonstrating its viability.
  • ADVANCEMENT: New technologies that represent a quantitative leap in the efficiency and metrics of wireless and radio communications technologies will be implemented and validated.
  • COOPERATION: Experimentation services that improve collaboration between teams to navigate, filter, and visualize data and metrics captured at multiple levels will be implemented and demonstrated.
  • EVALUATION: The feasibility of providing key 6G radio technologies in non-terrestrial environments and their integration into the mobile network, and the efficient management of distributed virtualized infrastructures to serve quality and continuous applications despite the participation of different clients in multiple locations with variable communication metrics, will be implemented and demonstrated.
  • VERTICALIZATION: Demonstrators will be implemented on the federated, open, and extensible infrastructure to enable innovative solutions of 6G technologies in vertical sectors, accessible to both the industrial fabric and the academic environment, and transferable to said vertical sectors to establish new business models.
  • COMPETITIVENESS: The competitiveness of the group will be increased, to serve as a driving force for the industrial fabric and the Spanish scientific/technical community.
