DESCRIPTION
Holoportation is transforming the way users interact within the Metaverse, offering a groundbreaking approach to representing people and objects as 3D volumetric video in virtual and augmented reality environments. However, this innovative technology faces significant challenges, including the efficient handling of complex data, minimising latency, ensuring compatibility across devices, and achieving scalability in multi-user settings.
Holomit® is an advanced holoportation system developed by i2CAT that delivers high-quality, real-time 3D representations for VR/AR/XR applications. By leveraging cutting-edge reconstruction techniques and efficient data compression, Holomit enables seamless integration of volumetric point clouds into dynamic, immersive environments. The system supports multi-user interactions and is optimised for a wide range of devices, including mobile platforms and head-mounted displays like Oculus Quest 3.
Holomit® has demonstrated its capabilities in various real-world applications, including its use in multiplayer VR games as part of the Medgaims Project. It has also been integrated into leading XR initiatives, such as Vivim, Heat, Presence, and XR-Eco, showcasing its versatility and performance. The technology has been successfully presented at high-profile events, including Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2021, Smart City Expo 2022, and Interihotel (2021–2023), solidifying its position as a leader in immersive solutions.
Holomit® has broad applications across industries:
Volum Technologies is i2CAT’s new spin-off, which will connect people through holographic technology using HoloMiT®. It will offer high-quality 3D holographic solutions from standard commercial cameras, facilitating immersive real-time videoconferencing at a competitive cost.
The product commercialised by Volum was defined after years of research and valorisation at i2CAT. HoloMiT® has been a major part of the European research projects VRTogether (H2020), XReco, 6G-XR, PRESENCE and HEAT (Horizon Europe), in addition to the ViViM project (RIS3CAT). This technology development process, initiated in 2020, has been validated through pilots and customer trials, paving the way for a long-term joint investment of more than €3.7 million to reach the spin-off phase.
