The event, framed within the RETECH program, unveiled ten projects that demonstrate the potential of data spaces to accelerate innovation and the digital economy in Catalonia.
The research and innovation center i2CAT gathered about fifty companies, government bodies, and technology entities this Thursday to showcase the potential of data spaces. The event, held as part of the RETECH program, served to present ten initiatives that highlight the capacity of these ecosystems to accelerate innovation and drive the digital economy.
Under the title “The future of data ecosystems to boost innovation: use cases from the Catalonia Data Spaces Demonstrator Center,” ten projects were presented, eight of which were developed with the support of the “Centre Demostrador d’Espais de Dades“, an initiative promoted by the Government of Catalonia and i2CAT within the framework of the RETECH program. The Head of Data Spaces Innovation at i2CAT, Jim Ahtes, highlighted the role of the Centre Demostradir as an incubator for data ecosystems capable of generating new digital services and facilitating a more secure, interoperable, and sovereign exchange of information, with applications in areas such as mobility, public services, health, and the social sector.
For his part, the head of the Technical Service Center of the Secretariat for Digital Policies, Arnau Serra, presented the main pillars of the Catalonia AI Strategy 2030, focused on the development of ethical and responsible artificial intelligence.
The session began with the presentation of two prominent projects. On one hand, the M3 project, presented by AMB Informació with the collaboration of TMB, ATM, and the Barcelona City Council, is aimed at integrating data from different transport operators to improve interoperability, optimize the public transport network, and facilitate the monitoring of urban mobility policies. This data space uses the Centre Demonstrator’s infrastructure for its development and piloting.
On the other hand, the DCaS-R project, led by Blue Room Innovation, with the participation of Celsa, Constructora de Calaf, and Inèdit, and supported by the Waste Cluster of Catalonia and the Waste Agency of Catalonia, aims to improve waste traceability and promote the reuse of materials in the construction and recycling sector through a Digital Waste Passport (DWP).
The day was structured into two parallel sessions. In the field of mobility, the ATM presented deployEMDS, a project that connects operational data from bus fleets and mobility records with predictive tools to boost on-demand transport and improve service planning.
In the field of sustainable mobility, Libelium and MasOrange showcased Mobile for Mobility (M4M), a project based on the integration of data from IoT sensors, traffic cameras, and anonymized mobile connectivity to feed digital twins and AI predictive systems applied to metropolitan traffic management and Low Emission Zones (ZBE).
Regarding public services, INYCOM and Nunsys presented EDEGIEC, a project aimed at the intelligent digitalization of civil protection plans through the use of IoT data, simulations, and AI tools to improve emergency response planning, such as for floods.
Furthermore, SIRT shared BCN_DATA_HUB, an initiative that allows citizens to control their data and use it to access more personalized mobility services.
The event also emphasized the field of health and social services. The company Evidenze presented the Nefro Data Space, developed jointly with Hospital Clínic, Omnios, and Blowww. The project uses clinical data to better detect and treat chronic kidney disease.
For its part, Altia shared EDAISS (Integrated Social and Health Care Data Space), an initiative aimed at interconnecting data from the health system and social services to offer a comprehensive view of people in vulnerable situations and improve data-driven decision-making.
Also presented were the Kvasar Health Data Space by KVSAR Technologies, a platform for sharing health data securely for research, and MindSyst, promoted by the WeMind Cluster. This initiative focuses on mental health and promotes public-private collaboration through secure data exchange and the use of AI to generate knowledge, develop personalized services, and improve evidence-based decision-making.
