During this year, the Ministry for Digital Policy and Public Administration impulsed the creation of various 5G Areas, a project focused on promoting 5G technology as a procurer, aiming to create a fabric and an ecosystem in Catalonia and became a hub of international reference. The goals of this project are the improvement of the existing technological services and the boost of the commercial use of the 5G network and its deployment, with use cases and tests beyond the Catalan urban areas.

Mr. Jordi Puigneró, Minister for Digital Policy and Public Administration of the Government of Catalonia, considers that deploying 5G Areas around the territory will serve as innovation “from and for the territory”, besides involving the business fabric and the institutions. Rosa Paradell, Director of the Innovation Business Development in the Public Sector of the i2CAT Foundation, considers that the 5G Areas will be acceleration for 5G technologies because they will allow dissemination days, training activities, co-creation workshops, pilot tests, and labs.

The 5G Areas are framed in the Catalan 5G Strategy, a project that plans to promote 5G throughout the territory. The 5G Areas launched are placed on Igualada, Tarragona, Lleida, and Móra d’Ebre. The impact of this initiative will reach the economic and social fabric, promoting economical innovation and the revitalization of the territory, avoiding depopulation. Aiming to boost the Catalan 5G ecosystem and transforming Catalonia into an international reference in this field, the 5G Areas aim to improve technical services around Catalonia, promoting the commercial use of 5G networks and propelling its display, as well as promoting use cases and prototypes in real settings and fostering a digital economy beyond urban areas with the development of new products and services based on 5G technology.

The i2CAT Foundation has collaborated in these projects along with the Mobile World Capital Barcelona, the cities’ councils, Telefonica, and local companies.
