IMPACT6G

RED DE IMPULSO PARA EL LIDERAZGO EUROPEO EN COMUNICACIONES MOVILES BASADAS EN TECNOLOGIA 6G

Spain

IMPACT6G is a strategic network that brings together the Universitat Politècnica de València, i2CAT, Gradiant, and the University of Murcia, leading R&D&I entities, with the aim of positioning Spain as a key player in the global race for sixth-generation (6G) wireless technologies. To achieve this, IMPACT6G seeks to influence European R&D&I policies, reinforcing Spain’s presence in initiatives like the European Commission’s Framework Programme through collaboration with the Centre for the Development of Technology and Innovation (CDTI) and other international initiatives. The network also encourages collaboration between universities, technology centers, and the private sector to create an experimentation infrastructure that validates advancements and accelerates 6G development in the country. In a context of intense global competition, this coordinated effort is crucial to securing Spain’s leadership in the future of mobile communications.

Within IMPACT6G, i2CAT is responsible for Work Package 5 (WP5): Spain’s Influence on European Initiatives. This package is the key driver for the network’s international positioning, ensuring that Spanish priorities are integrated into the European Union’s 6G roadmap.

The main tasks of WP5 include:

  • Reinforcing Spanish Presence: Establishing interdisciplinary thematic working groups (research and business) that actively join Horizon Europe projects.
  • Influencing European Forums: Organizing workshops and discussion forums in associations like the 6G-IA to disseminate Spanish advancements and influence roadmaps.
  • Institutional Coordination: Establishing close communication with the CDTI and the Autonomous Communities (CCAA) to guarantee strong and coordinated Spanish representation in Brussels.
  • Visibility in the EC: Attending key European Commission events to present IMPACT6G’s progress and results.

Estimated impact

The IMPACT6G Strategic Network aims to ensure that Spanish research and development translates into global leadership in new 6G generation technologies. The impact of the network’s work will be measured based on three key deliverables that will directly influence Spain’s scientific policy, industrial structure, and international positioning.

  • National R&D&I Strategy: Defining a detailed five-year roadmap for the development of wireless mobile technologies, providing authorities with a solid basis for defining support and investment policies.
  • Influence on European Programmes: Significantly influencing the definition of the European Commission’s X Framework Programme (FP10) to ensure that mobile technologies are considered a priority and that the programme aligns with the Spanish scientific-technical roadmap.
  • Infrastructure Consortium: The creation of a national consortium that pools and strengthens 5G/6G experimentation infrastructures (including UNICO infrastructures), maximizing joint capabilities and creating synergies among entities.

Transformative Impact by Dimension:

  • International Positioning: The most notable impact will be the increased Spanish influence in Framework Programme 10, which is expected to translate directly into an increase in the return of European funding to the country.
  • Strengthening the STI Ecosystem: The network will facilitate better interaction among the agents of the Spanish Science, Technology, and Innovation System. By identifying and coordinating national research groups, a joint offering of high-value results and knowledge will be generated, which is directly transferable to the Spanish industrial and business ecosystem.
  • Social and Environmental Dimension: The development of these technologies will contribute to social and gender inclusion and promote sustainability by supporting the monitoring of natural resources and the digitalization of processes.

Collectively, IMPACT6G’s results are designed to boost the quality of life and equitable and sustainable economic development in Spain.
