The Director of the Digital Society Technologies (DST) research group at the i2CAT research centre, Marta Martorell, has taken on a new responsibility within the European innovation ecosystem as of this Monday. The General Assembly of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) has unanimously ratified her appointment as an Interim Board Member of the governing board, succeeding i2CAT Associate Director Artur Serra and thereby consolidating the centre’s presence within the governance bodies of this leading international network.
With this appointment, i2CAT reaffirms its long-standing commitment to the Living Labs ecosystem, the defence of digital rights, and citizen-participation-based innovation models. Martorell’s participation on the board ensures continuity in i2CAT’s European contribution to driving technologically advanced digital social innovation that is also ethical, inclusive, and people-centred.
Martorell’s appointment follows a well-established trajectory of i2CAT within ENoLL, led for many years by the centre’s Associate Director, Artur Serra, who has been a key figure in the development and international projection of Living Labs. From his involvement in the creation of ENoLL in 2006 to his role as a member of its board since 2011, Serra has made a decisive contribution to strengthening the European Living Labs ecosystem and to its international expansion, consolidating i2CAT’s role as a benchmark actor in digital social innovation.
From the Digital Society Technologies research group at i2CAT, Martorell promotes a model of digital innovation focused on people, ethics, and digital rights. A specialist in Living Labs, digital social innovation, and impact assessment through Key Value Indicators (KVIs), she leads European and international projects aimed at the digital and green transition, socio-digital inclusion, and the development of open innovation ecosystems.
She has served as principal investigator in projects such as FORGING, INTEGER, Smart Ageing Synergies, and the Living Labs programme in Senegal in collaboration with FDSUT and ACCD. She has also advised regional governments on the design of digital strategies and participatory innovation models. Martorell is a regular speaker at international conferences including the United Nations Science Summit, ISIRC, Open Living Lab Days, and the Smart City Expo World Congress.
She is currently a PhD candidate in Sustainability, Technology and Humanism at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where her research focuses on the social impact of emerging technologies.
